— Introduction to Kayaking —

Touring kayaks are versatile boats, well-suited to exploring everything from calm lakes and rivers to remote coastlines.
This course is designed for both the casual paddler and those interested in ocean touring, and will introduce paddlers to proper technique and safety skills required to enjoy kayak touring. While the course is perfect for the beginner, anyone who has never had formal instruction will benefit from this class.

In this class you will learn efficient paddling technique and the necessary strokes to maneuver your kayak in any direction. The class progresses to advanced techniques such as bracing to prevent a capsize and the hip snap in preparation for learning to roll. Particular emphasis will also be placed on safety issues such as trip selection and practicing both self- and assisted rescues and re-entries.

Not an Ocean Paddler?

Even if you have no plans to paddle on the ocean, our Introduction to Kayaking will dramatically enhance your enjoyment of the sport. Not only will you learn how to efficiently maneuver your boat, but you'll be able to recover from a capsize. Don't forget — waves on lakes can get pretty big, too.
This course is excellent preparation for one of our Level 2 Kayak Trips, Rolling Clinics, or the Ocean Skills Classes.

We offer Introduction to Kayaking in two formats: three two-hour classes on weeknights or two three-hour classes on weekends. We also lead Introductory Sea Kayak Trips to the Massachusetts coast that cover much of the same material in a protected ocean environment.

$139 includes six hours of instruction, three weeks of unlimited on-site practice time at any of our three locations, wetsuit rentals, and borrowing privileges from our video library.

Two-Lesson Weekend Series meets for 3-hour sessions at our Newton Boathouse on the same day and time for two consecutive weeks (e.g. two Sundays in a row from 8:30–11:30am) except the following three series in 2008: May 18 & June 1; June 28 & July 12; August 24 & Sept. 7.
