— Introductory Rolling —
Every kayaker
remembers the excitement of their first roll! Rolling a kayak is an invaluable safety skill where a capsized paddler rights the boat without exiting the cockpit. A reliable roll allows you to paddle with more confidence in a greater variety of ocean conditions.
Our instructors will lead you through a series of steps designed to build confidence and make rolling as easy as possible. Working on the roll will also improve your bracing skills and allow you to have more fun on the water.
Our Introductory Rolling Classes are designed both for paddlers who have never attempted rolling and for those who have done some work with the roll and are still not there. For those looking to advance their roll to the off-side or learn additional rolling techniques, we recommend a private lesson.
During the fall and spring we hold our rolling classes in the pool at Regis College in Weston. During the summer, we hold our rolling classes in the clear water and sandy beaches of Lake Cochituate in Natick.
Rolling Class, June–September meets for one 3-hour session at Lake Cochituate in Natick.
$75 includes three hours of instruction, boat rental, and borrowing privileges from our video library.
Formal Introductory Instruction Recommended
We recommend, but do not require, that students take our Introduction to Kayaking, Introductory Trip, or private lesson before participating in our Rolling Class.
If you are not comfortable performing intermediate skills like sweep strokes, boat lean, braces, assisted rescues, and self-rescues, you'll be shocked by how much your skills improve by taking our Intro. to Kayaking course or its equivalent. While the name says "Introduction," this course covers many intermediate and advanced skills and will greatly benefit anyone who has never had formal instruction. We guarantee it!
