Introductory Rolling
The roll is the ultimate rescue: unassisted and fast.
Every kayaker remembers the excitement of their first roll! Rolling a kayak is an invaluable safety skill where a capsized paddler rights the boat without exiting the cockpit. A reliable roll allows you to paddle with more confidence in a greater variety of ocean conditions.
Our instructors will lead you through a series of steps designed to build confidence and make rolling as easy as possible. Working on the roll will also improve your bracing skills and thereby decrease your risk of capsize, allowing you to have more fun on the water!
Our Introductory Rolling Classes are designed both for paddlers who have never attempted rolling and for those who have done some work with the roll and are still not there. For those looking to advance their roll to the off-side or learn additional rolling techniques, we recommend a private lesson. If you wish to practice your skills during the winter without any instruction, attend a pool practice session.
Eskimo Rolling Videos
A few days before your class, pick up a rolling video from our video library. Watching the video will help you mentally prepare to work toward your roll, and — best of all — it's free for students!
During the fall and spring we hold our rolling classes in the pool at Hanscom Air Base in Lexington (where we also offer pool practice sessions without instruction).
During the summer, we hold our rolling classes in the clear water and sandy beaches of Lake Cochituate in Natick.

Pool Rolling Class, Fall & Spring meets for one 3-hour session at Hanscom Air Base in Lexington. Pool Practice Sessions are also available
$99 includes three hours of instruction, use of a whitewater kayak, and borrowing privileges from our video library.
Formal Introductory Instruction Recommended
We recommend, but do not require, that students take our Introduction to Kayaking, Introductory Trip, or private lesson before participating in our Pool Rolling Class.
If you are not comfortable performing intermediate skills like sweep strokes, boat lean, braces, assisted rescues, and self-rescues, you'll be shocked by how much your skills improve by taking our Intro. to Kayaking course or its equivalent. While the name says "Introduction," this course covers many intermediate and advanced skills and will greatly benefit anyone who has never had formal instruction. We guarantee it! If you have questions, please contact us.
Be Prepared to Wet Exit
Students who have not performed a wet exit may sign up for our Pool Rolling Class but must understand that they will be required to perform a wet exit at the beginning of class and that the class involves repeated immersion of the head and body while remaining in the kayak. Our instructors will teach and demonstrate the proper procedures beforehand. If you have questions, please contact us.
